Infuriated by the purchase of old manuscripts from Greek monastic libraries in the Ottoman Empire by the English traveller Edward Clarke (1769–1822), the classical scholar Adamations Korais (1748–1833) pleaded for the creation of a »Hellenic Museum« (Eλληνικόν μουσείον), that would register and preserve manuscripts as well as antiquities from all over Greece. His motion represents the first project for a Greek national museum, conceived in Paris at a moment when the Louvre collections were rapidly growing thanks to Napoleon’s spoliations.
