The page of a diary written by a Venetian public official in 1817 provides us with a revealing insight into the issue of outstanding restitutions following the Napoleonic spoliations of 1797. A diplomatic visit becomes the stage to show the sense of loss and illegitimate oppression felt by the dispossessed, along with their attempt to channel such emotions into a claim instead of surrendering in weary resignation.
